Tuscaloosa’s ACT Kids Sing and Dance Their Way Over the Rainbow

Twelve aspiring, young actors and actresses from Tuscaloosa have been chosen to perform the roles of Munchkins and Winkies in the upcoming classic play, “The Wizard of Oz” which will be performed March 9-14, 2010, at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex Concert Hall in Birmingham, Alabama. This spectacular musical is produced by Broadway Across America, a national touring group, and it is a modernized version of the 1939 MGM film, beloved by all ages. This is a new and lavish theatrical production that will knock your socks off and your ruby slippers, as well! Every aspect of the movie has been examined and made better with innovative art deco sets, breathtaking special effects, and stunning technicolor backdrops. Most importantly, there will be superbly talented actors, much-loved songs, and exciting choreography that will have you singing along and tapping your feet. This extraordinary production is, in fact, a celebration to commemorate The 70th anniversary of America’s most treasured musical, ‘The Wizard of Oz”.

The twelve local youngsters, ages 8-13, who auditioned together as a group from the Actors Charitable Theatre are under the direction of Joey Lay and Alisha Powell. The children have performed with Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre, Theatre Tuscaloosa and The ACT. Joey and Alisha having received a detailed packet of materials from the show, will guide the young actors through a month of 17 rehearsals. “Alisha and I have to stage all the blocking relative to the set pieces but without Dorothy, the witch, and Toto,“ Lay said. He is confident that the munchkins will be ready to join the show on Opening Night, March 9th, in Birmingham where there will be an hour in wardrobe and make-up and an hour in musical warm-ups, and then they will do a few run-throughs onstage just hours before the play actually opens.

All of this began when one of the children, after seeing “101 Dalmations“, also produced by Broadway Across America, said,” Mom, if those kids can do it, why can’t I?” Mom, realizing that she would have no peace otherwise, promised to investigate as soon as possible. Through the internet, she learned that auditions for the munchkins’ roles were coming up in a very short time. So Mom, along with 9 other moms, found two willing and capable directors, Joey and Alisha, and the hard work began. They had a week to turn the 12 very enthusiastic children into a singing and dancing group of munchkins. But munchkins they became, and, in no time, they were following the Yellow Brick Road, up to Emerald City (the Galleria) to audition and to prove that they were the group for the part.

Kim Reiter, the Munchkin Coordinator for Broadway Across America, taught all of the prospective munchkins the choreography that goes along with the song, “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead” which they practiced a number of times before the actual audition. Tirelessly, the highly motivated auditioners performed the number many times, each time looking as fresh and enthusiastic as the first. When the ACT kids were announced as the winning group, the joyous cheers of celebration rang out, like the cheers of the munchkins at the news of the wicked witch’s demise, the loudest of which were those of the parents and grandparents! No one in the crowd missed the fact that these children had just sung and danced their hearts out to earn a golden opportunity for an experience of a lifetime. Ms. Reiter said the ACT group “really took my notes, especially my acting notes. They showed a wonderful sense of enthusiasm, energy, and facial expressions. They were really into it.” There are many benefits for the children who perform in the touring plays. They will learn what it’s like to be a part of a professional company. They will be outfitted in the costume designs of Tim McQuillen-Wright, and be made up by an actual professional make-up artist! “Using local actors creates a Broadway boot camp for kids across the country who might be considering a performing career,” Ms. Reiter explained.

The children are certainly looking forward to meeting the professional actors who play Dorothy, the scarecrow, the cowardly lion, and the tin man, and all the other interesting characters, but the one they’re most excited about meeting is Toto. Apparently, the production company is well aware of this, because they sent a DVD and other materials to prepare the children for meeting Toto. They were told to completely ignore Toto (there are 2 Totos) until after the final show because Toto is there to do a job and does not need to be distracted. After the last show, Toto will be brought to their dressing room. At that time they can pet and visit with them. Now that’s something to look forward to!

What a wonderful learning experience! These children will have such fun while learning so much. They have already learned a great deal about the underlying themes of the play and the value of hard work, perseverance, heart, courage, and honesty. But the best is yet to come for the following Tuscaloosa children who will perform in the Birmingham Production of the Wizard of Oz: Abbie Eidson, Anna Eidson, Autumn Fuller, Taylor Harless, Farley McDaniel, Carrye Ann Rainer, Destiny Schatzline, Isaac Schatzline, Brody Southern, Farris Turner, Chandler Turnipseed, and Mallory Turnipseed.

The Wizard of Oz will be an extraordinary production that will intrigue and inspire the whole family. It’s timeless! And every audience member will take home priceless memories and lessons from this unforgettable play. We are very fortunate to have a play of this caliber so close to home because, after all, there is no place like home!

Congratulations, ACT kids, for a job well done! This is the stuff of which dreams are made!

Lollipops & Fairytales... Where the Easter Bunny Always Stops to Shop!

Lollipops & Fairytales, located in Main Street Shopping Center between Zoe’s and Talbots across from Indian Hills Country Club, offers a wide range of baby and children’s clothing, shoes and unique gifts. A Quaint Boutique with an inviting atmosphere that is organized so that you can find exactly what you are looking for. “We carry quality products at affordable prices, and we have excellent customer service which is our top priority,” says owner Michele Falls. Having just returned from the Gift and Apparel Market, Michele is excited about the new and unique products they are adding to the current popular brands they’ve been carrying, and she invites you to come in and see all that they have to offer.

The business was founded in 1999, and Michele began working there during her time at the University of Alabama, where she graduated in 2003 with a degree in Fashion Retail and Marketing. She dreamed of one day owning her own boutique, so when the store’s original founder wanted to sell the business, Michele jumped at the opportunity to buy it. For the past two years, she has continued to build the business, strengthening and broadening the product lines. The store carries girl’s sizes ranging from preemie to 12, and boy’s sizes from preemie to 5. They also offer Lay-a-way and Gift Registry.

Having first worked at the business as an employee has helped Michele have a greater understanding of the products and services her customers are looking for. It also helps that she and her husband, Gabe, have a 2 1/2-year-old daughter and a little boy on the way. “It helps to know what other moms are looking for and to come across products that I like and know would be useful to me as well,” Michele says.

“I know 2009 was a tough year for everyone, and because of that, I vowed to make this year easier and different for my customers,” she continues. “Making my customers feel special is very important to me. My goal is to carry products in all price ranges so that we have something for everyone and every budget. I also want to offer the best customer service possible, and my staff and I offer helpful product knowledge to our customers. While we carry items that have proven to be best-sellers over the years, we are also carrying lots of new and different products that we are excited about.”

Some of those new gift items include Sleep Sheep’s, chenille stick horses and pacianimals, all in the $20 price range. They also offer a full line of Kissy Kissy, Oh My Baby and Paty Baby clothing, along with Little Giraffe products, just to name a few. Other products include crocheted baby hats and headbands with flower clips and bows, monogramable items such as gowns, hooded towels, burp cloths, bibs, blankets and diaper bags in all price ranges. Big Brother/Big Sister shirts, books and gifts are also available. Children gift ideas include Books to Bed pajama sets, Pecoware, Jr. Cooking Sets, Animal house shoes and football sets. Lollipops & Fairytales also offers a wide range of birthday outfits, tutus, hats, bibs and memory books for a child’s first birthday.

“We are also offering hand-painted Easter baskets this year,” Michele says, “with your choice of four different designs and any color ribbon for the handles.” These baskets range from $38-$40 and can be personalized with your child’s name. They also offer Easter basket stuffers for boys and girls such as sunglasses, grow-a-heads, squeaky toys, stuffed bunny rabbits and more. The staff can also stuff your basket for you and wrap it up in cellophane.

Kids will need Easter clothes to go along with those baskets, and the store can meet those needs as well. They carry basic white sweaters, shirts and bloomers, and they have fun spring casual and dressy clothing as well. The store carries dressy brands such as Vive la Fete, Le Za’ Me, Jess Cole, La Jenn’s, Jack & Teddy, Luli & Me, Maggie Breen Too and Chabre’. Casual lines include Bailey Boys and Mis-Tee-V-Us which are Exclusive lines to them, Funtasia Too, Remember Nguyen, Rosalina, Anita G and too many more to mention.

“We also carry a full line of shoes, including Sun-sands, L’amour, Angel, Keds, Puddle Jumpers and Squeaky Street shoes for both girls and boys, ranging in size from Newborn 0 to Big 1,” says Hilary Bigham, employee of 2 years. ”It’s fun to fit children for shoes”, she continues. Knee socks for boys, lacey socks and tights with ruffles for girls are also available.

Moving the store from its original location behind the Northport Diner to its new home behind Ruby Tuesday’s on McFarland was just one of many changes Michele made for the business, and her choices continue to prove popular with her customers. “People are so busy with work, family activities, school events and other functions,” says Sarah Crane, employee of 3 years, “and sometimes it’s hard for them to take time to shop for gifts. We have many customers who will call and have us wrap up gifts for them, so they can just run by and pick them up quickly. We’re happy to do that, because it makes it easy for them to get gifts quickly and easily.”
Along with customer service, community service is also important to Michele. She and her staff have given to various local churches and schools for fundraisers, The Buy for Rise Sale and Eagles Wings, Inc.

Go to Lollipops & Fairytales and check out their products for yourself. They are open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The phone number is 205-333-7677. You will not be disappointed and the staff looks forward to seeing you there!

TUSCALOOSA TUMBLEBUS “The Original Gym on Wheels”

Tubmblebus is a specialized mini-gymnastics and fitness program developed for walking toddlers up to 8 yrs old. Our goal is to bring fitness to children for their proper physical and motor development. Owners are Barry & Tami Hunter; Walter and Janis Drane
Tumblebus is brought to your child’s school on wheels. (We do not transport your children). A full-sized school bus has been refurbished into a safe, fun gymnasium in which the children have their classes. Our program offers every area of basic tumbling and fitness in mini-form. The bus is equipped with bars, beam, vault, mini-trampoline, ropes, rings, climbing apparatus, zip-line and more.

With today’s busy lifestyle, we have found that parents aren’t always able to find the time to do all they want for their children. By bringing Tumblebus to your child’s school, we give each child the opportunity to participate in an excellent fitness program which doesn’t infringe on the family’s valuable private evening hours.

We started our business by driving the big yellow school bus — complete with the Tumblebus name emblazoned on the side — around to area preschools and daycare facilities. We offer the children a “FREE DEMO” on the Tuscaloosa Tubmblebus. The students’ try-out the mini-trampoline, monkey bars, slides, rings and tumbling mats set up in the bus’s mobile gym, and then let parents decide if they want to enroll their children.

When people and children first hear about the bus they are not quite sure what to make of it, but when they see it for themselves, most everyone loves it right away. How can you look at this bus and not smile? It’s crazy; and children go for crazy! Of course, the first question from most children is: “When are we going?” They are so funny! They want us to drive while they play on the bus.

It’s the most awesome feeling when you pull up to a school and you can hear the students inside chanting…”Tumblebus, Tumblebus”….they make you feel so important and needed….well actually they make you feel like a “superstar”. It’s a rewarding feeling for the students, parents, school staff and the Tumblebus staff.

Currently we travel to 18 different schools in Tuscaloosa County. Our Tumblebus session lasts for 30 minutes, which includes a group of 8 to 12 students at a time. We start with warm-ups, silly songs, and then get into our lesson plan. We end with hand sanitizer, stamps and gummibears. We are fully insured and licensed. At the school location we set-up a mailbox station, there is no extra work to be done by the school directors or staff. We do all the billing, collecting, contacting and e-mailing. We come in and get our students and then when classes are over we return them to their teachers.

The Tumblebus classes are optional as most parents pay the tuition fee. We do have a few schools however who have decided to add this as part of their curriculum and help the parents cover the cost of classes. The weekly program is $40-a-month and the bi-weekly program is $20-a-month. Our classes on the Tumblebus always have a theme - whether it’s Circus, Valentines, Beach, Christmas or Animals. It is incorporated into the lesson and set to lively music. There are always two teachers on the TUMBLEBUS to guide students across the monkey bars, up/down the tumbling mats, down the zip-line, across the balance beam, and much more. We teach them basic tumbling with a lot of fun and fitness.

The Tumblebus program currently operates in 27 different states in the U.S. and Canada. Tumblebus is a nationwide franchise, we are bus number 306. We are nationally televised as seen on “Jon & Kate Plus 8”. Tuscaloosa Tumblebus offers your child a very dedicated staff of conscientious professionals. Each instructor is trained in safety and smiles while giving your child a positive learning experience.

Local Author Publishes Book

New Children's Book Author Raises Money for Birmingham Non-Profit

'Night Night Birmingham', by Freddie Leonard Stewart III, offers highlights of Birmingham, Alabama attractions for kids. Proceeds from book sales help raise funds for Wylam's New Covenant Christian Center.

Freddie Leonard Stewart III writes children's books to help families learn about kid friendly attractions in local communities. He has committed a portion of sales from his book, 'Night Night Birmingham,' to fund the purchase of new computers for the New Covenant Christian Center.

Freddie developed the book after reflecting on a trip to various attractions in Birmingham, Alabama. After a bedtime story about their visit with his two year old daughter, Sierra, Freddie noticed how she recalled the various places that they visited on the next day. Her reaction sparked the inspiration for 'Night Night Birmingham'.

'Night Night Birmingham' is a story about a young girl who shares her experience of visiting local attractions in Birmingham. The story features several major attractions in the Birmingham metro area including the Birmingham Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

Freddie has volunteered as the computer technician for the New Covenant Christian Center (NCCC) for over five years. The New Covenant Christian Center is located in the Birmingham neighborhood of Wylam and serves the children and adults in the local area. The NCCC computer lab needs new computers to support child and adult learning initiatives.

Freddie presents a different approach to promoting kid-friendly attractions by incorporating them into the story. "My goal is to promote the local community by presenting a good story for children while sharing key information for parents. By dedicating proceeds from sales to the New Covenant Christian Center, we will be able to also support the local community."

About Freddie Leonard Stewart III:

Freddie is currently a graduate student in the Interactive Technology program at the University of Alabama. He works as a technical specialist for the University of Alabama's College of Commerce and Business Administration.

About the New Covenant Christian Center:

The New Covenant Christian Center is an inner city outreach organization primarily funded by donations from individuals in the community. The organization strives to bring education and development to a generation of mature young adults in the Birmingham community.

Diana: A Celebration

Girls Getaway

Diana: A Celebration

By Linda Holloway

Photography by http://www.hollowayproductions.com/

Now is the perfect time to take a break from every day life to nurture your friendships or mother-daughter relationship with a “Girls Getaway” to Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Civic Center is hosting the award-wining exhibition, Diana: A Celebration, featuring the life and work of Diana, Princess of Wales. The exhibit features nine galleries containing more than 150 objects—ranging from Diana’s royal wedding gown and 28 of her designer dresses, to family heirlooms, personal mementos, paintings, rare home movies and photos. The exhibit is on loan from the Althorp Estate, the Spencer Family’s 500-year-old ancestral home in England, through June 13, 2010.

When I learned about the exhibit, I began planning a 35th birthday trip for my daughter, Ashley, and her friend, Chasidy, to relive childhood “princess” memories. Chasidy’s mom and I wanted our daughters (both school teachers) to enjoy a trip fit for royalty. They have been friends since age two, and have dressed up like princesses countless times. Fantasy became reality when they watched (along with over one billion television viewers) as Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles of England on July 29, 1981.

Upon entering the exhibit, we were in awe by the encased diamond Spencer Tiara (circa 1840) with a huge poster of a smiling Princess Diana in the background. Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, narrates the audio tour. Another gallery is dedicated to the Spencer women family tree and includes a portrait of Diana’s paternal grandmother—the resemblance is amazing. Here, the family jewels are the highlight. The next gallery depicts Diana’s childhood and youth, including toys and personal diary. We entered the Royal Wedding Gallery that magically transformed Ashley and Chasidy back to 6 years old again. The centerpiece was…the “Dress of the Century.”

The Dress

Designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel of London designed the ultimate fairytale royal wedding gown made of ivory silk taffeta and lace. The entire gown is hand-embroidered with more than 10,000 tiny mother-of-pearl sequins and pearls, and the 25-foot silk train is the longest in royal history. The diamond tiara, veil, train, shoes, parasol, diamond earrings and bridesmaid’s dress is encased with the royal gown. We were in a sea of nostalgia as the stirring music that was played at the Royal Wedding filled the room. Film clips from the event flashed on the screen complete with Diana arriving in…what else, but a glass coach complete with footmen. I watched as my grown daughter and friend encircled the exhibit several times—taking in the smallest details while my focus was on them.

Visitors will enjoy other galleries featuring Princess Diana’s humanitarian work that includes a prayer book signed by Mother Teresa, and the musical score and lyrics of the Elton John/Ernie Taupin composition, adapted from “Candle in the Wind.” On display in the Style and Fashion Gallery are 28 dresses, suits and evening gowns designed by Chanel, Versace, Valentino and Azagury that were worn by the Princess during her public life, accompanied by photos and designer details from the event at which the outfits were worn. We exited by display shelves filled with books of condolences opened to reveal comments by those who loved the “People’s Princess.” http://www.dianaexhibition.com/, tickets, http://www.ticketmaster.com/, 800-745-3000

The Ritz-Carlton Offers Exhibit Package

You can afford the best! We checked into the elegant AAA Five Diamond Ritz-Carlton located in the famed shopping mecca of Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. Both downtown and Buckhead Ritz-Carlton locations are offering overnight packages to Diana: A Celebration. The package includes a deluxe guestroom for one evening, two VIP tickets with audio tour, American breakfast for two in The Café, overnight valet parking and roundtrip transportation to the Atlanta Civic Center. Exhibit packages start at a bargain $259 at the Buckhead location.

The hotel is flanked by some of the best shopping in the U.S. (think N.Y. City.) No wonder the luxury hotel is frequented by celebrities with its friendly staff, and guestrooms with 37” high-definition flat panel television and mahogany hardwood floors in entry. You may need to set two alarm clocks—feather beds with fine linens are a deterrent to getting out of bed. Start your day in The Café with a fresh made-to-order omelet. The concierge will help you with dinner reservations and call ahead for a hotel vehicle with driver that will whisk you away to nearby restaurants and attractions. The hotel made the prestigious Conde’ Nast Traveler’s Gold list for 2010. www.ritzcarlton.com/buckhead, 800-241-3333.

Shopping & Girls Night Out

We walked from The Ritz-Carlton to Lenox Square and shopped at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and Louis Vuitton. Phipps Plaza showcases Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Company and Giorgio Armani. Filene’s Basement is where we found designer clothes and products at discounted prices. http://www.buckhead.net/

For fine dining, we took the advice of the locals and tried Kyma, a Greek restaurant formerly featured in Gourmet magazine. The décor was opulent, but there are two reasons why I will remember this restaurant: it was the best meal that I have ever eaten (Slow Braised Lamb Shank) and Andre, our waiter, was the best in the business. The girls enjoyed Executive Chef Pano I. Karatassos’ Slow Cooked Eggplant Stew, Pan Roasted Grouper and Prime Filet Mignon. http://www.buckheadrestaurants.com/, 404-262-0702

After dinner, I suggested we sit in the lobby and celebrity watch…a ruse. I had planned one last surprise for the girls. Debra, a driver from Greene Classic Limousine arrived and said, “Princess Ashley and Princess Chasidy, your car is waiting.” We boarded the limo for a tour of Buckhead and downtown Atlanta. Debra pointed out the mansions of Buckhead, music venues, Centennial Olympic Park, and other famous sights of Atlanta while the girls kept a watch for stars from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” television show. http://www.greeneclassiclimousine.com/, 888-425-5466

Ashley and Chasidy had a trip to remember, but for me; I was able to time travel to the days of bright-eyed children in long swirling “princess” dresses and tiaras. Who says you can’t go back again? Enjoy other Atlanta attractions including World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Inside CNN, and High Museum of Art. For the ultimate planning resource for your trip, visit http://www.atlanta.net/ or call 1-800-atlanta.

Come blog with us on http://www.hollowayproductions.com/ about the Atlanta trip.
