Secret Meals For Hungry Children℠
There’s achildren’s crisis going on right now in Alabama. Alabama has one of the highestpoverty rates in the country with over 20 percent of our state’s childrenliving below the poverty level. Many of these struggling families rely on free orreduced-price meals from local schools to help feed their kids. And when theweekend rolls around and the classrooms are empty, so are some of ourchildren’s tummies. Without proper nutrition, students can suffer from physicaland developmental problems, inhibiting their ability to learn.
The destruction wreaked bytornados in April only added to the serious challenges brought about by budgetcuts for public programs, severe unemployment and worries about the future. Andno one suffers more than Alabama’s neediest children.
Three years ago, AlabamaCredit Union started Secret Meals For Hungry Children℠ with just 18 school children. Now, the Secret Meals program serves over1,100 children by quietly slipping packages of food into their backpacks everyFriday of the school year. This is done anonymously to prevent the child frombeing singled out or made to feel uncomfortable. Thanks to these anonymouslyplaced nutritional food packs, the children are able to better concentrate inschool, better develop physically, and feel that someone cares.
With a donation of $120,you’re feeding one child for an entire school year. But whether it is a donationof $10 or $1,000 your donation will make a huge difference in the lives ofthese children; every penny raised for Secret Meals goes toward purchasing foodpacks. Alabama Credit Union and its partners donate their time and othermaterials to Secret Meals, so there are no operating or promotional expenses tobe deducted.
We’re limitedonly by the amount of donations we receive. And we’re asking for your help.
And the difference you canmake in a child’s life through Secret Meals is no secret at all.
