The Capitol School - No Summer Whining
All children look forward to the day school is out and their summer vacation begins. Yet, in just a few days….parents may hear WHINING!

* “I don’t have anything to do.”
* “I miss my friends.”
* “I don’t want to watch TV.”
* “It is too hot to play outside.”

One solution is Summer Explorations 2008….a series of morning and afternoon classes for ages 3 – Middle School. The Capitol School’s 14th summer of programs provides “mix and match” programs that help support families. Parents who want to enroll their children in swimming lessons in the afternoon might enroll in Summer Explorations for the morning session. On the other hand, parents might take their children to Bible School in the morning and enroll only in the afternoon at Capitol School. Taking a vacation for a week? Then, ask about signing up for one week only (at half price, of course). The Capitol School’s flexible schedule meets the needs of busy families.

For working parents, the school opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 5:20 p.m. Parents who enroll students for morning and afternoon classes can send a packed lunch and the school will provide supervision from noon until 1:00 at no additional charge. Parents are thrilled when they enroll their son or daughter for all eight sessions and they get one session free!

Who? Teachers in Summer Explorations 2008 are Capitol School faculty members or public school teachers who submitted proposals for exciting learning experiences for students. Most have B.S. and Master’s degrees and teaching certification. All 36 sessions are planned to offer students unique experiences that are memorable and meaningful. Sample topics of the 32 sessions include: Super Science, Art, Scrapbooking, Sewing, Cooking, Spanish, Music, Drama, Nature, Reading, Writing, Insects, and many more!
What? Two months of learning featuring 32 classes @ $155 each class or $3.88 per hour—less than hiring a babysitter! Sessions are planned for 40 hours of instruction meeting four hours daily over 10 days. The topic is integrated into many curricular areas to enrich and expand student learning. Classes are small to allow for lots of active learning and time with the teacher.

When?
#1 June 2-13 #2 June 16-27
#3 June 30 – July 11 (except 4th of July) #4 July 14-25
Where? All classes meet at 2828 Sixth Street on historic Capitol Park in downtown Tuscaloosa. Call 758-2828 to request a brochure be mailed to you or log on to www.thecapitolschool.com to view the entire Summer Explorations 2008 schedule.
High School Carnegie Units can also be earned in classes meeting June 5 to July 26 daily from 9:00 to 12:30 or 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. All high school courses earned at The Capitol School transfer to other accredited high schools. Cost for each class is $485.

CLUB Z
For many children, the summer months can be a time of boredom, filled with long hours of mindless video games and unimaginative television watching.   Studies have shown that students can lose anywhere between one to three months of learning over the summer break, especially in the areas of math and reading.

The tutors at Club Z! In-home tutoring understand both parents’ and students’ frustrations and know that continuing education over the summer break is the key to a positive school year ahead.  It is a chance for children to master important skills or to further explore areas of interest in a fun, creative way, with individualized attention.

Summer tutoring with a Club Z! teacher will:

  1. rebuild self-esteem that was battered by bad grades from the previous school year.
  2. close the achievement gap by helping students catch up and get ahead before the start of the new school year.
  3. prepare high school students with the strategies, skills, and confidence to take upcoming ACT and SAT tests.
  4. reinforce skills for children with learning disabilities, who might otherwise lose skills from a 2-3 month separation from formal learning.
  5. provide money-saving enrichment and accelerated learning opportunities outside of traditional daycare.
  6. enable students to master benchmarks necessary for passing state reading, writing, and math standardized tests.
  7. allow kids to explore and develop the skill areas they find interesting, such as art, music, foreign language, and more!

Club Z! summer sessions offer uninterrupted, individualized tutoring as often as parents choose --  2, 3 or more times a week.  Club Z! also offers in-home tutoring in all core subjects, including reading, math, science, as well as instruction in study skills, music, computers, SAT, ACT and other assessment test preparation.

Find out more about how Club Z! can enhance your child’s summer by visiting our web site at:  www.clubztutoring.com or by calling  205-464-0001.   Ask how your child can receive a free week of tutoring!

FIG offers Cooking Camp for Kids!
Are you looking for a great kid’s summer camp program?  Are your kids ready to graduate from Easy-Bake ovens?  Then FIG Cooking Camp is perfect for your child.  This camp gives 5 to 14 year old budding chefs the opportunity to experience a variety of cooking methods as they create delicious meals. Yes, they will eat what they create.  They will measure and mix ingredients, learn to use kitchen tools, follow recipes, learn the basics of etiquette, nutrition, food safety and plate presentation.

Supervised by Shelly Reister, this week long camp will get your kids to move beyond Pop Tarts and expand their taste buds and imaginations.  One of the most important things last year’s campers learned was that the way something tastes depends on the way it is cooked.  One seven year old camper said “Oh… this is good, I just thought I hated mushrooms.”

The highlight of each class is the take home items they have made from scratch.  They can hardly wait to share their creations with their families.  These classes will give your child confidence to experiment, techniques to broaden the palate and start them with a desire to cook for themselves.   Contact FIG at 205-345-8888.

LFR is surrounded by a 50,000 acre pine forest and is situated next to the beautiful Shadow Lake. Would you pray about heading to the Deep South for a summer of life changing ministry?

We have 13 summer camps available for children and teens and our mission is, “building relationships for eternal impact.” Some of our great tools of the trade to accomplish this mission include horseback riding, a wild ride on a water tube, low and high ropes course elements (zip line, climbing wall, challenge course, vertical playpen, and more), basketball, gym games, tennis, beach volleyball, swimming, fishing, canoeing, paddle boating, wacky team competition events each morning, archery, rifle range, athletic tournaments, Frisbee golf, ultimate Frisbee, a fully equipped game room/arcade, and much more. We also have a paint ball course for teens that kids and staff alike say is a BLAST! As you can imagine, the fun is unbeatable!

With a combination of this kind of high energy recreation combined with heart-transforming messages from our speakers, challenging small group Bible Studies led by the summer staff, and Christ exalting praise and worship, and a close connection that each camper has with his/her camp counselor, each week at Lake Forest Ranch will be unforgettable. Add this to the mix; Mission Camp Macon 2008 is an awesome opportunity for high school age and college age students to make an impact for Christ while at the same time receive the blessings of a week of camp at LFR. The LFR Summer Staff serves as the mentors for godly kids who come in from around the country to help us to facilitate this amazing week-long ministry event. Mission Campers are selected by their student pastors for ministry in one of three choices depending on the student’s gifts and spiritual maturity. 2008 will be our fifth year to host this event. Ministry areas for Mission Camp Macon include:
1. Working at one of seven city–wide mission Kids Camps for children (ages 7-11);
2. An Evangelistic Sports Day Camp at LFR for local teens (ages 12-18);

Riverview Camp For Girls
Have you ever seen a place so beautiful, picturesque and exciting that you commented, “I wish I could step into that setting?” Well, here’s your chance! Riverview Camp is located only 3 hours away on top of Lookout Mountain in Mentone, Alabama. Considered one of the South’s leading camps for girls, Riverview is a place where girls gather from all over the South (and beyond) to enjoy both one and two week sessions of fun. In fact, parent readers of “Nashville Parent Magazine” have voted Riverview the “best sleep-a-way camp” for 6 years in a row! So, come see what they are talking about!
As a traditional Christian camp, Riverview offers an abundance of activities for campers to enjoy. For the campers who “never want to leave” they often choose to stay for 3 to 8 weeks of camp for a longer camp experience. The age range of campers is 6 to 16, and campers live in cozy cabins (bath rooms and showers in all cabins), often with their “best friend from home.” Perhaps, like some, you will attend camp without a friend, only to find new friends immediately, and continue to return year after year, just to be with those buddies.

Riverview also offers a Mother-Daughter Weekend that is totally mom-daughter interaction. There is one in May and September and you can apply on line!
Call now to receive free information or go on-line to view 2 camp videos and enroll as well. You are also invited to come for a “camp tour” prior to camp. Just give us a call to schedule one at your convenience! Call 800-882-0722 or go to www.riverviewcamp.com.

TUSCALOOSA ACADEMY KNIGHT
Preschool Summer Camp 2008
Looking for a rewarding, fun, educational, and enriching day camp for your pre-schoolers? Look no further! Tuscaloosa Academy will offer a class for 3 and 4–year-olds and one for 5 and 6-year-olds (children entering Kindergarten and First Grade in the fall). Morning sessions will be fun and academic, focusing on children’s literature in the 3 and 4-year-olds’ class and on Dr. Seuss and science in the 5 and 6-year-olds’ class.

The summer program for 3 and 4-year-olds builds a wonderful foundation for the skills of early literacy and numeracy through play. The children enjoy different crafts each day. Themes this year include “Mister Men,” a set of books from England, hugely popular with this age that promotes a positive, happy outlook and encourages excellent social interaction and social skills. We shall also be sowing and growing, singing, moving, and playing instruments. And, of course, they will play, play, play!

Afternoon sessions center around summer fun activities including water fun, crafts, and games. Our highly qualified teachers are both certified and have taught in the TA Pre-School for many years. Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 5:30 p.m. Half-day and full-day sessions will be offered.
